PHASE 1: TRIAGE
Struggling to make sense of life? Does everything feel like such a mess that YOU feel like one big failure? The "Triage" phase is where you not only don't know where to start to make it better, but are at the point of giving up on it all. It's really painful but I promise: It will get better! Look below for more about this phase along with simple, actionable things that will help you feel better fast.
COMMON THOUGHTS & FEELINGS AT THIS STAGE:
Is this you???
Discouraged and/or depressed
Feeling like a failure
Physically and emotionally exhausted
Feeling completely alone and/or abandoned
Worrying that things will never get better
Feeling stuck
Wishing you could just escape and make all the problems go away
ROOT PROBLEM: difficulty adjusting to changed circumstances
We find ourselves in triage whenever a major change or a big life event disrupts our old normal and makes us question everything. Things used to be “okay” and now they’re not. The bigger the gap between how we thought things would be versus how they actually are, the greater psychological pain we feel.
Change is hard, especially if it comes from something outside our control. We feel like a victim and look for things to blame at the same time that we berate ourselves for not being or doing “better”. Everything spirals and you become convinced it’s always going to be this bad. But I promise: It won’t!
I’VE BEEN THERE!
After moving across the country, having my first baby, and starting my new demanding job just two weeks later, I felt completely lost and fell into a deep depression because I couldn't keep up with things like I used to. I felt like a failure at it all and got suicidal thinking there was no way out. Thankfully now I know better: There IS!!! And even though you can’t see it in the moment, your struggles soon become the source of your greatest strength. Hang in there, friend!
SOLUTIONS:
Get professional help as needed. Seriously. Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help! Here’s the FREE 24/7 Suicide Hotline if you need it; you can also chat free with a volunteer mental health expert here.
Go back to the very basics: consistent sleep, healthy food, deep breaths, fresh air, sunshine, slow walks, etc.
Prayer, meditation, and/or journaling are wonderful, proven ways to improve your mental health. Even a few minutes a day can make a big difference.
Really separate your incredible self-worth from whatever hardship you're experiencing. Trust that your struggles will only make you stronger. Acknowledge where you're at and commit to change.
Dig deep into everything that's wrong so you can rebuild your life from the ground-up. Change takes time but you can do it!
Lower your expectations and cut out all non-essentials until you're in a better physical and emotional place. Easier said than done, I know…but it’s so important to clear your plate of everything you possibly can. Remember: It’s just temporary. Doing this will speed up your ability to get back to “normal” whereas continuing to operate like you used to will just exacerbate your down time.
Disconnect from social media, the news, and anything else that’s causing you to feel worse right now. So much of our modern life is linked to anxiety and depression. Take a break from those things and you’ll likely be amazed at the difference.
Find something good to take your mind off all the bad. As they say, laughter is the best medicine.
Seek out at least one trusted person and really deepen your connection with them. We’re social beings by nature; the desire to belong is one of our most fundamental needs and yet real connection is rarer than ever in our frenzied online world.
